In September 2016 the Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay adopted its newest project, which was to fund and install 50-AED (automated external defibrillator) on Kauai and Niihau. This initiative was dubbed “The Heart of Gold Campaign.” The Rotary Club of Hanalei Bay has partnered with the AED Institute on Oahu who is supporting our work by reducing the costs for each unit and providing guidance and collateral support.
Our communities on Kauai and Niihau are very vulnerable to medical events such as sudden cardiac arrest due to our remote location. Wilcox Memorial and Kauai Veterans Memorial, both critical access hospitals, are staffed with outstanding emergency room physicians and nurses, but we must first give that person the best possible chance to make it to a hospital for stabilization and then be air-lifted to Oahu if needed.
The window of opportunity to mitigate the effects of sudden cardiac arrest is only minutes in length, but when an AED and CPR is used on a victim within those first couple of minutes, the survival rate increases to 70-90% from a frustratingly low success rate otherwise. Kapaa Fireman Jeff Weiss recently stated at our Black and White Ball in December, "If we get to the scene and there’s been no treatment, our success rate is really low,” he said. CPR alone does increase the chance of survival, which is why everyone possible should have this training, but coupled with AED intervention, survival rates soar.
Very simply put, AED saves lives. Sudden cardiac arrest can be brought on not only by internal short circuiting, but also something like a near drowning, a blow to the chest in a ball game, or other type of trauma like an auto accident or fall. The wait/turn-around time for an ambulance to our most outer-lying areas is not quick, and is further inhibited by unpredictable factors such as weather, traffic, and the number of existing calls our island's few ambulances may already be responding too. By adequately covering Kauai and Niihau with AED, we exponentially increase our ability to return a resident or visitor, grandparent, parent, neighbor or child, back to their families after becoming a victim of sudden cardiac arrest.
Please consider sponsoring an AED to be installed in a school or other high traffic or remote area. For the full sponsorship of a unit ($2,000) a plaque will also be installed honoring you, or someone you love. Donations of all sizes are greatly appreciated.
